The client

Founded in 2007, WorthPoint Corporation is an international, online information and media company that has quickly become the world’s largest resource for researching art, antiques, and collectibles. The company’s core feature is Price Guide — a vast database of sales records and images for 500+ million items that have been aggregated from eBay, virtual marketplaces, and leading auction houses.

In 2012, WorthPoint was named to the OnDemand 100 Top Private Companies List in the On-Demand Software category and it won the About.com 2012 Readers’ Choice Award – deemed the Best Resource for Collectors! In 2011, WorthPoint Corporation was named one of the top 100 private technology companies in the mid-Atlantic region on the Venture Summit Mid-Atlantic list. The company has offices in Atlanta, Georgia, and Dublin, Ohio.

Business challenge

WorthPoint needed to build and maintain a solution that would integrate their existing products – WorthPoint PriceGuide, WorthPoint MAPS, WorthPoint Library, and several others, into a single platform that had to scale and provide fast response times with billions of records in its database.

The client needed it to be highly scalable and easy to use, as the aim was to become the online meeting point of collectors, no matter the type of antiques they want to evaluate. They also needed two mobile apps that would allow customers to gain quick access to the price components.

Solution delivered by Tremend

Tremend provided a dedicated Scrum team engaged in building and maintaining for almost 10 years WorthPoint’s range of products that have eventually merged into a single digital platform – www.WorthPoint.com

Tremend has also built various additional projects, prototypes, and tools ranging from WorthPoint’s mobile apps, enhanced searching algorithms, OCR integration to AR (augmented reality) prototypes built for both web and mobile. The software solution built by Tremend includes further features, such as the option to highlight sections, add notes, and bookmark sections for future reference.

The mobile apps were able to provide collectors the capacity to discover nearby shopping locations, check the prices of items, and get data on-the-go for venues like estate/garage sales, flea markets, auctions, and antique stores/malls.

Results

The solution Tremend provided to WorthPoint enabled the company to offer a complete set of services to its customers. Using Amazon’s AWS capabilities and SOLR for indexing, WorthPoint is able now to deliver much faster response times using a scalable architecture.

WorthPoint has managed to win the prestigious award offered by About.com, being named “Reader’s Choice Awards” back in 2012. They were deemed the best virtual resource site for collectors in the entire United States. The mobile apps offered excellent features, enabling collectors to locate the nearest shopping venue, obtain reference & value information, and obtain accurate collectible news, all with just a few touches of the screen.

It’s very hard for a business owner of a small company to find dedicated workers in America. That’s why we chose Eastern Europe. I’m very familiar with the quality of people in this area. Unlike other popular software development outsourcing destinations.
